Consumers tend to make straightforward New Year resolutions: Spend less, save more and pay down debt. This year, it appears retailers want to change just one thing...their bottom line. The tried-and-true methods aren't working anymore as consumers learn to resist the urge to buy, so merchants are starting their own trends. According to Bloomberg, consumer spending stalled in December, with a rise of just 0.1 percent, as Americans took advantage of last...

Through the ages, women have never had a lack of complaints about the inequalities between men and women. The life and works of the storied Julius Shulman

    25 September 2009

Though I had always loved his photos, my curiosity into architectural photographer Julius Shulman’s lifetime of works didn’t begin until he passed away this summer. I had seen his photographs flashed throughout the pages of coffee table tomes and even have postcards with photos he took (my favorite being of Case Study House #22 by Pierre Konig) hanging on my wall. My favorite image captures two women sitting inside a living room with large glass walls all around as the house seems to dangle precariously off a hillside that overlooks the Los Angeles skyline. So I was naturally ecstatic when I saw the trailer for his documentary called Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman and saw that exact photo being used on the movie poster. One glimpse of the trailer and the sheer beauty of the images the man captured in his storied career will astound even Shulman neophytes.

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman opens October 9th at the Cinema Village (22 E. 12th St.) followed by a post-screening Q+A with director Eric Brickner.
