The Short List
I have a whole array of shoes, but only a few pairs on my short list. 28 November 2009
My man-of-the-moment recently text messaged me “Am I on your short list?” I didn’t really know what that meant. As in, I have never in my life said anything is on my short list, nor did I even really get it until I asked my stepfather. (It means whatever you’re among the top. The few special things now. The select.) So then, yes, he is on my short list. But what exactly does this alleged “list” even consist of? But what if I just get sick of one pair all together? Or I love another pair so much they are the only pair I want to wear for the rest of the season. (I thought the fish in the sea analogy was getting a bit old, so I’m onto footwear.) Furthermore, how do you decide when a “list” is no longer necessary because you love your Louboutin suede thigh highs so much, you will wear them every single day, right through spring until your legs sweat right out of them. What happens then? Then you have to choose. Is the woman who walks around wearing the sames shoes stronger because she has the guts to do so or weaker because she can’t say no to the shoe and rotate it with a few other pairs. Because at this point, wearing the same shoes - while reliable, comfortable and banging with every ensemble - seems like a risky move.
