Prices go up and prices go down, but this year they're going every which way. While it's difficult to predict how the economy will impact the cost of products and services, there are several sure bets on both ends of the scale. Here are a few predictions. GOING UP Orange Juice The FDA discovered "low levels" of a fungicide in the 2011 orange crop imported from Brazil, the world's largest produce of oranges. Airfare More people want to fly,...

Through the ages, women have never had a lack of complaints about the inequalities between men and women. Particularly when it comes to romance, dating and age, there's always been a lot to complain about. I wish I could say that I am not about to contribute to that litany of gripes, but oh no, I'm about to jump right in. So, this whole "Cougar" thing. The Short List

I have a whole array of shoes, but only a few pairs on my short list.

    28 November 2009

My man-of-the-moment recently text messaged me “Am I on your short list?” I didn’t really know what that meant. As in, I have never in my life said anything is on my short list, nor did I even really get it until I asked my stepfather. (It means whatever you’re among the top. The few special things now. The select.) So then, yes, he is on my short list. But what exactly does this alleged “list” even consist of?
I thought about my steady list of circulating dates. With disdain, I immediately crossed off a couple who shouldn’t make any list long or short. But then what happens when your short list becomes so short it only consists of one. Then is it still a list? And if not, should you look for people to add. I have this problem with shoes sometimes. I have a whole array of shoes, but only a few shoespairs on my short list. God forbid something happen to one pair - leather damaging trips, spills, heel tragedies - then I’m down to a super short list. Hmph.

But what if I just get sick of one pair all together? Or I love another pair so much they are the only pair I want to wear for the rest of the season. (I thought the fish in the sea analogy was getting a bit old, so I’m onto footwear.) Furthermore, how do you decide when a “list” is no longer necessary because you love your Louboutin suede thigh highs so much, you will wear them every single day, right through spring until your legs sweat right out of them. What happens then?

Then you have to choose. Is the woman who walks around wearing the sames shoes stronger because she has the guts to do so or weaker because she can’t say no to the shoe and rotate it with a few other pairs. Because at this point, wearing the same shoes - while reliable, comfortable and banging with every ensemble - seems like a risky move. But when the shoe fits…
